KITCHEN DESIGN - BLUSH & ROSEWOOD
For a client transitioning to a 5,500 sq ft townhome in South Orange, New Jersey, James Yarosh was tasked with redesigning a kitchen that felt familiar and worked well with the client’s existing traditional-style dark wood furniture, yet also showcased how the client has personally evolved with a forward-looking modern concept.
Channeling an aura of confidence and feminine strength, Yarosh selected a sleek marriage of blush pink and rosewood cabinetry to create a warm interest point that artfully blended design styles in the home. Due to the natural beauty and exotic striping inherent to rosewood, the darker veining provided the perfect bridge in design styles. Pivoting to a blush pink and modern bronze as the kitchen’s new neutrals, the warm-hued palette creates a gentle and serene space for cooking and entertaining.
The spacious kitchen now features a sleek floor-to-ceiling feature wall of modern rosewood cabinetry, including hidden panel-ready sub zero freezer and refrigerator units, integrated wall and speed ovens, and ample vertical storage. A blush-paneled wine fridge further romanticizes the experience of the room. The rosewood cabinetry wraps its way around the kitchen’s perimeter, flanking the range and glossy bordeaux hood, here featuring an accent door with elegant vertically ribbed inset glass that echoes the drama of the rosewood grain. A constellation of custom designed hexagon-shaped backsplash tiles includes uniquely-colored marble and glazed tiles to nuance the surrounding deeper shades of red and burgundy. Wolf appliances were intentionally selected for their iconic red knobs, being a welcome addition to the unconventional color play. A stainless steel farmhouse sink and double dishwashers increase the client’s ease of use in the space.
A quiet alabaster-colored quartzite with multi-directional veining was chosen for the countertop and rosewood-paneled island, unifying the room while also beautifully reflecting the blush cabinetry. The thin sculptural iron of the counter stools and solid performance velvet fabric from JAB provide another hint of pink, adding a luxurious texture to the kitchen's color palette. The client’s former drip-like clear-blown glass pendants serve as the “something old,” bringing something familiar and loved in the revitalized kitchen that reflects who the client is today.
