August 2011- NYC Metropolitan Museum - Lucian Freud
With my Friday night Drawing at the Met classes providing further reason to be in the great museum weekly, I searched for the permanent collection of Lucian Freuds and found an unplanned exhibit had been created to display seventeen works of the artist. As one of my favorite artists of our time, I took advantage of multiple visits to truly appreciate the extraordinary talent of his brushwork and texture. With the artist's recent passing in July of this year, having been considered the greatest living painter for so long, I was glad to see this quiet exhibition, which also featuring a diptych by Francis Bacon and one by Frank Auerbach, essentially become our local tribute.
After my visiting of the show, I took the following weekend to finish my reading of Martin Gayford's book "Man with a Blue Scarf: On Sitting for a Portrait by Lucian Freud". As it is not uncommon to feel sad when any good book comes to an end, the final chapters magnified that feeling since the sadness of the great story about the studio experience of the art critic as model was coming to an end as well as the artisit’s life.
